What Our Everyday Technology Course Covers, Part by Part

Many of the questions that reach me as an instructor are not about computers at all. They are about the services that now sit on top of them: a bank that has moved its forms online, a government letter pointing to a web address, a streaming subscription a grandchild set up and nobody understands. Everyday Technology Explained was built for exactly these moments. It starts from the idea that you do not need to become technical to use these services well; you need to know what each one is for, what it asks of you, and where to slow down.

The course is part of our curriculum alongside Computer Basics and Smartphones Made Simple, but it does not assume you have taken either. If you can open a web browser and type an address, you have what you need to begin. Each lesson is short and keeps to one service at a time, so nothing piles up before you have had a chance to try it.

The course moves from the familiar to the less familiar. We begin with how to recognize a trustworthy website and what an account, a username and a login actually mean, because every later lesson leans on those ideas. From there each lesson takes one everyday service and walks through it in the order you would meet it in real life: finding the page, signing in, reading what is on the screen, and finishing without surprises.

Lessons are written to be repeated. Margaret Ellison's approach to slow practice shaped the whole platform, and I follow it here: you are encouraged to return to a lesson a second and third time rather than push ahead. Short practice tasks close each one, using sample screens so you can rehearse the steps without touching your own accounts until you feel ready.

Online banking is the topic people most want to learn and most fear getting wrong, so we give it room. The lessons explain what you can do from a banking page: check a balance, review recent activity, pay a bill, send a transfer. We cover the order of screens, what each button commits you to, and how to read a confirmation so you know a payment has gone through.

We also spend time on the habits that keep you comfortable: logging out when you finish, never sharing a one-time code with someone who phones you, and knowing that your bank will not ask for your full password. The course does not replace the guidance your own bank gives, and it never asks you to enter real banking details during a lesson. The aim is that, when you do sit down with your own account, the screens already feel familiar.

Forms that used to arrive in an envelope now arrive as a link. These lessons show how an online form is built: required fields, drop-down lists, date pickers, and the review page that usually comes before you submit. We practise on sample forms so you can make mistakes safely, go back, correct a field, and see how saving a draft differs from sending.

A good deal of the stress around e-forms comes from not knowing whether something went through. So we teach you to look for a confirmation page, a reference number or an email receipt, and to keep a copy. We also talk about attachments, such as scanning or photographing a document and uploading it, in plain steps without assuming you own special equipment.

Not everything in this course is about errands. A full section looks at streaming: what a subscription is, how a monthly charge works, how to find something to watch, and how to pause, rewind and turn on captions. We explain the difference between watching live and watching on demand, and how to read the small print on a free trial so a charge does not catch you out.

We also cover the practical side of the living room: connecting a television or tablet to your home internet, why a picture may stall, and what to try first before calling anyone. Libraries, audiobooks and music services are touched on in the same relaxed spirit. The point is enjoyment, not performance, and you can skip to this part of the course first if that is what draws you in.

This course suits adults and seniors who can already use a browser but feel unsure around banking, forms or subscriptions, and anyone helping a parent or neighbour get started. You will not be asked to buy equipment, and the lessons work on a computer, tablet or phone. Realistic outcomes are modest and useful: you will recognize what you are looking at, complete common tasks with less worry, and know when to stop and double-check.
