The Tools We Use to Teach Computer Basics From a Blank Desktop
Priya Sandhu
A look at the practice files, printed cheat sheets and slow, repeated exercises that shape the Computer Basics for Adults course, and why we chose each one.
Starting with a desktop that has nothing on it
Practice files that are safe to break
Printed cheat sheets beside the screen
Short lessons, repeated on purpose
A pace the learner controls
What the tools are for
The Computer Basics course is built from modest tools: an empty desktop, files that are safe to break, a printed guide beside the keyboard, and short lessons that return to earlier skills. Each was chosen because it lowers the stakes for an adult learning at their own speed. If you have wondered where beginners usually stumble, it is rarely the technology itself, but the feeling of being rushed. We design every lesson to remove that feeling.
